This is the ONLY Japanese restaurant I will go to for sushi! always fresh, great prices. I love their cold green tea and the Fire bird roll! A must! super clean, friendly staff and fresh food. Can't go wrong!

I've been to this place twice - once, two years ago while visiting my brother; and yesterday, again while visiting my brother. I'm sure there's a bunch of great items on the menu, but both times I've gotten the Donburi, at the suggestion of my brother. Let me tell you, Donburi is the TRUTH. tuna or salmon, it doesn't matter. get it, and you'll be happy.

I've been going here for about 3-4 years now, and it's possibly the best Japanese I've had. It's a fairly small place, tucked in a shopping plaza, next to a circuit city, but don't let that fool you. The food is delicious, and contrary to the large "SUSHI" sign that sits outside, that's not all they have. Kazu's has a nice sized menu of traditional Japanese food, as well as a wall of items that are added as the chef sees fit, that aren't on the actual menu. From sushi, to donburi, to teriyaki, to udon, Kazu's has a little bit of everything. The staff is amazingly friendly, and I've only had 1 bad waitress (who, after a quick talk to the staff, no longer works there). The place isn't terribly big, having only some 5 tables, 2 booths, and a sushi "bar". If you go on a weekend, try to go early, as it gets packed pretty quickly. And if you're not a big sushi fan (I wasn't at first, and I still dislike most seafood), don't skip over this place. The katsudon (breaded pork, sweet egg, and onion over rice) is to die for. And the cajun chicken roll is a great way to introduce someone to sushi who is skeptical. You all owe it to yourself to check Kazu's out if you haven't yet! Edit: If you have a choice between here and driving to Tampa, go to I ai sushi on Waters. I still love Kazu's, but the menu at I ai has a larger selection.

Had a sushi craving and looked for something nearby. Small restaurant but it was packed. I did takeout, but I may come back and visit in person too. People seemed to be liking the food. My takeout sushi is not the best that I have had. The rice was too sticky and the size of the rice huge. It just was lackluster, hence the 3 stars. Will try again and update if required.

So glad that I found this place! It is very small, but very comfortable. The sushi here is ultra fresh and cold. (hate warm sushi) They also have Bento boxes which totally rock! Try the Buccaneer roll. YUM!!!!!!!!!!! Have been here many times and never had a bad roll or meal!!!! The owner makes the sushi!

After reading reviews to find a good sushi joint I'm glad we came here ! It's easy to find right across from the Mall on Tacoma street next to Toys R Us. From the outside it looks deserted - most of the shops are closed except for Gamestop , Kazu's and Toys R Us. The place is a hole in the wall but darn good. Service was quick and good , the food was delicious. The sushi rice was seasoned perfectly ! I always look for Japanese owned sushi restaurants because I trust the freshness and authenticity of the food. I wasn't disappointed . Our waitress must have been the owner and her husband must have been the sushi chef. She was very friendly. We ordered several items on and off the menu (Chirashi) and we weren't disappointed . The Agedashu Tofu was light and crispy - in the perfect sauce . The Chirashi was soo good , each various piece of fish was fresh ! The price was cheap compared to other restaurants. Highly recommended , even my Japanese mother loved it.

The best sushi! Firecracker roll, Atlantic roll, Super Mexican roll, Caterpillar Eel roll all are to die for! Super fresh and made in the proper Japanese tradition with an American twist! However you can still find many traditional items! Service is almost always great. It can get busy, on a Friday or Saturday call ahead.

I love good sushi restaurants, and I hate that this is a mixed bag experience. First, what is good about this is very good, probably three or four stars. The sushi, sashimi and sushi rolls are pretty good, and not a bad value. The important thing about sushi is fresh fish and a decent serving, and this place has that. I enjoyed my serving of salmon sashimi and the Rainbow Roll. The other area restaurants that serve sushi are pretty bad, so in the Port Richey/New Port Richey vicinity this is the only worthwhile sushi source. Hiro's across the street is disgusting. But there are some things here that are not so good, knocking stars off the review. The restaurant is located in a nearly abandoned section of a strip mall off US 19. It is a small place, kind of uncharacteristically dirty and seedy for a Japanese restaurant, and the bathroom stinks. They don't do well at controlling the temperature (probably because they are struggling). The tables and chairs are not too comfortable and some are kinda worn. The décor is plain and hideous, and not a place you would want to take a date to for a special night out. Most obnoxiously, the featured menu items are written in magic marker on paper plates/signs and hang all over the wall. I tasted some of my companion's tempura, and it was greasy and unpleasant. But don't be surprised if you get bad cooked food in a sushi restaurant, it's like ordering a steak in a pizza joint. Duhhh. The service is slow and the servers and staff are apathetic slobs. They are mostly local kids and don't know anything about what's on the menu. The Asian sushi chef here is a very grumpy old man, I think his face would crumble off if he ever cracked a smile. So, if you are in the area and don't want to drive to Pinellas or Hillsborough, and you absolutely must have edible sushi locally, then you might find this acceptable. (Are you current on your tetanus shots?) Personally, I would make the drive to some place better.

This place kinda reminds me of Hong Kong (I know they are Japanese!)...a little dingy but awesome food! The sushi signs are hand written on paper and hung on the wall...love that. Had the Chef Special roll (awesome) and the ole standard Cali Roll (also excellent) Its the ONLY sushi place I will go to in Pasco (not thrilled will food selection in pasco for sure..)

OMG I feel like I just had some crack! I can't believe this stuff is legal....lol Had the 2 roll combo for 9.50 got the Mexican and salmon roll with salad. So amazing walked 2.2 miles to get here and want to turn around and walk right back. I see many long walks in my future.

Don't let location scare you. Kazu is a gold metal winning chef from Japan and makes some amazing rolls.

It is so oddly located that you will pull into the parking lot and wonder if this place is even open for business. You will open the door expecting to see a depressingly empty restaurant. Instead you will find a vibrant little sushi joint. The place is never empty due to the loyal customer base who dine hear on a regular basis. The prices are extremely reasonable, the food is always quality, and the service is fast. They even have a kids menu with some quality options like whitefish nuggets and teriyaki chicken instead of Mac and cheese and the crap you usually see.

By far the best sushi around!!! My friend introduced me to the place a couple years ago and I have been going ever since!! I've gotten my youngest hooked on it too!!!

Food is great! Customer service is great too! ((: definitely should try out! More authentic Japanese food, there is sushi but a more variety. I always get the spicy salmon donburi! The best!!

I've been going to this place for years and it is definately a hidden gem in this area. Located in a half dead shopping plaza you might not even notice it is there but it is one of the best sushi restaurants that I've been to. The sushi is excellent and most of the rest of the menu is equally as good. Great restaurant.

This place is decent but nothing special. The portion of fish in the rolls seemed very small with what we ordered. They used way too much rice to substitute for lack of fish. Service was fine - they sat us right away and were attentive thereafter.

I have had Kazu's a few times and most recently for Valentine's Day. The sushi is always fresh are artistically prepared. It's a quiet, small place not in a great strip mall or hot spot. But it's worth the trip to come inside. The service has always been good for us. They always welcome everyone and say goodbye no matter how busy. I know there are much more trendy and hip places in Tampa, but this is a hidden little gem in this area!

I am visiting from Hawaii. So my standard for restaurants in general, let alone sushi, are very high due to high quality everything in HI. However... I walked in when NO OTHER patrons were present. I heard a woman, whom appeared to be a manager or owner, say, "Please sit anywhere." So I chose a booth table in the corner and sat down. Immediately I heard a waitress, my waitress, say, and Im quoting her verbatam, "I guess I have to do this the hard way." She could've been talking about any task, but I assumed she was referring to my choosing the farthest seat, in the corner, to which I thought I might appologize and offer to scoot over to the bar. When she got to the table I realized that she was disappointed at having to pick up 3 settings (plates, silverware etc) of the 4 that were on the table. AND my choosing of the farthest seat. She was not friendly or talkative. She did not visit back at the table to ask if everything was ok. I am a very observant person, not to be confused with outright nosey. I observed the same waitress to seemingly not enjoy the patrons whom came in right after me. Then a family came in. Their waitress was pleasant. But she had to keep returning to their table because back-of-house couldn't do this or that, and they had no rice paper for any rolls for any of 5 patrons in the group. My miso and my rolls were mediocre, so-so. It all tasted good but the nori seemed odd and my soup wasn't hot. I recommend you read BEN M's review of this place, he is spot on. My summary, If you never had sushi before, this place might impress you. If you've eaten sushi out before, you may be disappointed. As for the "regular" crowd, I bet this is the only sushi they know, so ignorance is bliss.

If there was a category for Japanese-Pasco Fusion, this place would be in it. I had a difficult time rating this establishment because there really isn't that many places in the vicinity to compare it against. Compared to the local competition (Ichiban, Tokyo Japanese Restaurant, etc.), this place is actually pretty good. But if I was being honest and had to compare it to other sushi restaurants I've been to in the Tampa, Orlando, and St. Petersburg areas, it was definitely lacking. I really wanted to like the food. But there was just missing something. As another reviewer wrote, I think the word "lackluster" works well to describe it. I wish I could offer something more constructive beyond that. Lastly, I was a bit frustrated with the sake. I mean, look, I know I'm not going to find some rare batch of aged koshu style sake here... But they could at least have a FEW good popular brands would be nice. Instead, I saw signs for "green apple sake" shooters. WTF? As someone who actually enjoys sipping quality sake, I was a bit annoyed by this. For this reason alone, I prefer to go to Mike's Sushi. It's a half hour away but there is a better selection of decent sake. Last but not least, I was not pleased by the "digestive distress" I had after eating here. I'm lactose intolerant . As best as I can guess, there must have been dairy ingredients used in one of the dishes. I'm usually quite good at avoiding such situations, so I wonder whether some of my rice was prepared with butter or something... I'm not sure. I'm not factoring that into my review rating, but I did want to share it for others who might have similar issues with dairy.

The sushi here is decent enough, but there is very little seating. It's best to go at an off time when there won't be much of a crowd.

Kazu's is the reason I don't understand where my money went on payday. I love coming here. I have tried several sushi places in the area, some of which seem to have unsurprisingly close or reopen several times, and Kazu's is the only place I thoroughly enjoy time and time again. Take out is never a long wait. On their 10 year anniversary date an insane amount of people showed up to show their support, and it was really clear to me then that they truly are the best. There are always interesting specials on the back wall when you walk on. Everyone is nice. I really like the 2 roll combo with soup or salad for when I don't want to spend a lot. Great price and selection. Just recently got into the Mexican roll - the crunch of the shrimp is the best part! You must try the tempura appetizer - shrimp and veggies.

Love this place! Always fresh and good size portions for the money! Always a fast order and friendly faces. I wish they delivered but they would be even busier then they already are! Barely ever a seat when I go to pick up my food and it's no wonder because they are so awesome!

My wife and I eat at Kazu's all the time. It is the only place we will eat sushi. We have been going their for years and it is the first place we recommend to someone look for excellent sushi......Keep up the awesome work Kazu.

I called in quite a large to go order tonight ($60.00). When we opened the boxes the tempura rolls were cold a mushy and the cold rolls were warm and soggy. Keep in mind I live around the corner so that is not enough time for 6 rolls all to go bad. I called the restaurant to let them know that we were not going to eat it because it was the absolute worst sushi I had ever had. She said to me " well you ordered to go so that is what happens, I will tell the owner" She did not offer for me to bring back the food or make it right in any way. I am very disappointed. My husband and I go out for sushi once a week however we have moved and Kazu's is close to our home so we figured lets try it... BIG MISTAKE my dog wouldn't eat this garbage. Stay away from there if you are planning on ordering take out...

This has become my favorite Sushi spot. The Tuna Tartar is so awesome, I can't even describe it. I avoided this place for too long because of it's location and small dining area, I could smack myself now for waiting so long to try it! The Edamame is completely different than usually served but it has a great seasoning that I love. The Spicy Tuna is hot, but doesn't take away from the taste. Kazu's Bento is fabulous and it was plenty for 2. I try to go when I think it will be slow because of the limited seating, so far I have been lucky! Staff is always friendly & they greet you when you first come in the door like you are family.

As I understand it (though something may be lost in the translation), the owner of Kazu's used to be the private chef for the Japanese ambassador in Washington. When he retired, so did his chef, who then moved to Florida (of course), and opened this restaurant. And Holy Mackerel, what food! This is very authentic Japanese food - I know, because i was stationed in japan in the navy. Perhaps the only bad part of this review would be the service, which is variable at best. The restaurant is very small, only a few tables, almost hidden in a corner of a mall, and frequently has a line at the door. the sashimi is extremely fresh, the tempura perfect, and the sushi very, very good. Even the appetizers are good. I like the egg plant, but this may not be to everyone's taste. IMHO, I think this is the best, and most authentic Japanese restaurant in this area, and we are lucky to have it here in central Florida.

My wife and I have been here multiple times. Some nights we just crave some sushi. The sushi is absolutely fantastic, the service is wonderful. Kazu is always very friendly. I know we don't have many sushi establishments here in the New Port Richey area, but this is our quick and easy go to when we are looking to get our fix.

I've been visiting my parents in Port Richey for years from Orlando. I LOVE sushi and have eaten sushi all over the world. When I saw positive reviews for a place not 5 minutes from my parents house I thought it was too good to be true! Well, you know what they say... The restaurant is small, dark and oddly decorated with cat themed pictures (I guess a play on the name of the place). Looks can be deceiving; you never know when you'll find a jewel of a restaurant so we kept an open mind as we ordered. Things started going downhill with our server. He, to his own admission, was completely out of it. He recommended to my Father a Bento box even though my Dad said he didn't like sushi. I had tried to direct him to the teriyaki or tempura options. Our server said he could do cooked sushi (for an up charge, of course) which my Dad still didn't eat. My husband and I, however, were excited to try the sushi. We ordered 3 rolls off the menu as well as bento boxes. After getting our boxes (no sushi yet) we noticed specials on the wall that were not on the menu. We got our server's attention and added a chef's special. He looked blankly at us and said, "You ordered sushi?" So he'd forgotten/lost our sushi order. We ended up telling him to forget the first 3 rolls and just add the special roll. After 10 minutes or so somehow our sushi order still hadn't been placed. We told our server to just forget the whole thing and bring us the check. The food we did eat from our Bento boxes was just ok. The sushi included in the boxes was maybe a step up from average but nothing to come back for. The tempura was soggy and the shrimp were small. Kazu's may have great sushi but thanks to our blundering server we'll never know.

I've been here roughly three more times since my last review. The weird thing about this restaurant is everything looks pretty pricey on the menu for the amount of food you get (the taste has gotten much better though) but the check is always a lot less than I thought it would be. It's always a pleasant surprise for me, anyway. Service has become much better. Whenever I go only Kazu's wife and one other guy are waiting tables, which is fine by me. They're attentive but not in your face, and are quick to make suggestions. I guess they remember me now despite my not having gone in a few weeks because they instantly remembered my face and comments I made last time I was there. Another good thing is they have KIMCHI. The bowl was $6 but it was HUGE. My friend and I also ordered two rolls -- Japanese bagel roll and spicy salmon roll -- and of course, my friend's favorite yakimochi. The fish was fresh, the dipping sauce was good, and I had a very enjoyable time. My opinion towards this place has changed. Only complaint I have is that their air conditioner is broken, so it was pretty hot inside for the first ten minutes I was there or so. It eventually cooled down a bit, though that may have been because I wasn't moving too much. Despite it being around 530 pm, it also wasn't too busy, which is rare.

@Janene Wow, I am so sorry that you had a bad experience. Kazu must not have been working that day. I also see that it was about a year ago that you went. Some of the staff have been changed around a bit. I recommend you try it again =3. I love Sushi, and

I decided to check out Kazu's yesterday because I've heard good things about it and Not many other Sushi options in Port Richey. IMO, it wasn't that great. When I called to order I could tell the girl on the phone is in high school or just lacks customer service skills. I asked about any specials and she told me I need to come in and look at the wall. I decided to go with what I typically get when I eat sushi and just Iordered the Bagel Roll togo. I arrived early to check out their "specials." On the front door there are a bunch of tacky signs with rules about not eating to go in the store and not supplying straws for outside drinks. OK, I guess you need those disclaimers in Port Richey but it just looks tacky. Went inside and there is no AC. Smelled like raw seafood. I don't know much about keeping raw seafood "Sushi quality" but I would expect you shouldn't be able to smell it. It was just gross. Checked out the "wall specials" also on tacky hand written posterboard. Prices are not very competitive, but I am used to getting sushi in Orlando from Koyoto where the offer the same bagel roll for $3.50 during happy hour. My order was almost $6 just for a Bagel roll and the sushi was very lack luster. It seemed much smaller than any other bagel roll or Philly roll I've ever bought. Overall, Kazu's is probably the worst place I've gotten sushi from, but there are not many other options in Port Richey. I haven't tried any other meals there so maybe it was just this one....

Kazus is amazing I've been going there since him and his wife opened it and I've never had problems Kazu is always nice and friendly and I enjoy all of his sushi. He has many unique rolls that are one of a kind! Best sushi place I've ever been to by far nobody beats this place the buccaneer roll and house roll are to die for along with the tempura fried Japanese bagel roll

  • Vito G.

They used to be terrific, but two things that keep my rating at only three stars are the size of their sushi rolls (which are abhorrently tiny for what you're paying), and the price that is tethered to them. The money is not well spent, at least for sushi. Which is supposed to be a specialty of the restaurant. The entrees and the specials are this place's saving grace. One time I ordered miso soup and the tofu was frozen. The clumsiness and mistakes that are made can be appetite-killing, but for the most part, this place is alright. Not the worst place you can eat in town.
